If I Wanted to Change Careers Again…Here’s Exactly What I Would Do
Thinking about a career change but unsure where to start? As a career transition coach and purpose-driven life coach, I help people figure out what’s next—and how to create a career and life that feels like an extension of who they are and what lights them up. This process isn’t always linear, but it’s the journey I went through myself, and the one I now guide my clients through.
Here’s exactly what I would do if I were starting over:
I’d get clear on my mission – what kinds of problems do I want to solve, contribute to, or find fascinating?
I’d find my unique zone of genius – what am I uniquely good at, what am I passionate about, and how does that overlap with what the world needs?
I’d identify potential avenues I could take to fulfill this mission and align with my zone of genius.
I’d immerse and expose myself to the potential pathways I’m interested in—through books, podcasts, volunteer work, conversations with experts, attending events, courses, or projects at my current job that align with that mission or problem.
I’d take stock of my energy through the process and use it as data in my quest to find the best career path for me. What gives me energy? What drains it?
I’d stay open to the path changing! Part of the beauty of a big life change is that there is an opportunity to discover new paths and even new parts of ourselves we didn’t know existed.
I’d plan financially for a dip or pause in income and make sacrifices in certain areas of my life. I’m all about graceful transitions, but oftentimes big dreams require investment—in learning, in your ideas, or in accepting a reduced rate while you’re in transition or just getting started.
I’d embrace my current role. Sometimes we miss the opportunity to be present where we are because we’re so busy thinking about what’s next. But right in front of us, there are skills we can build and opportunities we can explore—even if we don’t plan on staying forever.
I’d prioritize upskilling, but I’d get creative and curious about what that could look like. Could your work fund this? Could you take a free course to gain exposure before making a bigger investment? Could you offer services for free to help you learn and build testimonials?
I’d work on my mindset and learn how to get my mind on my team vs. working against me. This is honestly 75% of the battle. People have so many stories (that often go waaaaay back) that hold them back from doing the things they want.
Reading this is one thing… putting it into practice is another.
Having someone to help you find clarity, process your insights, and actually take aligned action is what I do every day as a career transition and purpose coach.
If this work has been on your mind, there’s still time to connect before my mat leave begins in early October. I’m coaching now through August and September—so if you’ve been thinking about starting this journey, I’d love to chat.
